Notes

Harmonia is best known as the wife of Cadmus and an important ancestress of the Theban royal family.

Her marriage to Cadmus is presented as an extraordinary event attended by the gods.

The wedding becomes associated with famous divine gifts, especially the necklace traditionally known as the Necklace of Harmonia.

Despite the name Harmonia suggesting harmony or concord, the descendants of Cadmus and Harmonia experience repeated tragedy.

Their children include figures such as Semele, Agave, Ino and Autonoe in familiar traditions.

Through Semele, Harmonia becomes the grandmother of Dionysus.

Through Agave, she becomes connected with Pentheus and the terrible conflict between Pentheus and Dionysus.

Harmonia therefore sits near the centre of the Theban genealogy even though she is not herself the protagonist of the most violent stories.

Later traditions also connect Cadmus and Harmonia with transformation into serpents, giving their shared story a final mythological transformation after the disasters suffered by their family.
