Notes

Semele is a princess of Thebes and a daughter of Cadmus and Harmonia.

She becomes the lover of Zeus and conceives Dionysus.

Hera discovers the relationship and brings about Semele's destruction through deception in the familiar tradition.

Semele asks Zeus to reveal himself in the full form in which he appears to Hera.

Bound by his promise, Zeus complies.

A mortal cannot endure the full divine manifestation, and Semele is destroyed.

The unborn Dionysus is saved and later completed through Zeus, giving rise to the famous tradition of Dionysus' unusual or 'twice-born' birth.

Semele's story gives Dionysus a direct place within the Theban royal family.

This becomes crucial in the later story of Pentheus, because the god rejected by the king of Thebes is actually the son of Pentheus' own aunt.

Semele therefore connects the foundation genealogy of Cadmus with the later religious mythology of Dionysus.

Theban Cycle
