Notes
Agave belongs to the first generation of children born from Cadmus and Harmonia at Thebes.
She marries Echion, one of the surviving Spartoi who sprang from the dragon's teeth sown by Cadmus.
Their son is Pentheus, who later becomes king of Thebes.
Agave's family connection places her directly between the founding generation of Thebes and the later conflict involving Dionysus.
Her sister Semele becomes the mother of Dionysus.
In the tragic tradition, Pentheus refuses to recognise or accept Dionysus and attempts to suppress his worship at Thebes.
Dionysus drives the Theban women into ecstatic Bacchic worship, including Agave.
Under divine madness, Agave participates in the killing and dismemberment of Pentheus without initially recognising her own son.
When the madness lifts, she is forced to understand what has happened.
Agave's story therefore turns the conflict between Pentheus and Dionysus into a family tragedy as well as a religious confrontation.
