The Amazonomachy
The Amazons invade Attica and fight the Athenians under Theseus in the Amazonomachy. The conflict is connected with Theseus' relationship with Antiope or Hippolyta and with earlier Greek expeditions against the Amazons.
The Story
The Amazonomachy is the mythological war between the Amazons and Athens during the age of Theseus.
The conflict belongs to a larger network of traditions about Greek encounters with the warrior women associated with the region around the Thermodon.
Why did the Amazons attack Athens? Ancient accounts preserve different explanations.
One important tradition connects the invasion with Theseus carrying away the Amazon Antiope. Other versions use the name Hippolyta, and traditions also connect the wider hostility with Heracles' expedition against the Amazons.
The surviving Amazons gather for war and travel westward toward Greece.
Diodorus describes the Amazons crossing through Thrace and eventually entering Attica with a substantial allied force.
Their advance reaches Athens itself.
Ancient writers remembered Amazon positions close to the city, including areas associated with the Areopagus and the later Amazonium.
Theseus organises the Athenian defence.
In some traditions Antiope fights beside Theseus against her own people.
The battle becomes a direct struggle for control of Attica rather than a distant heroic expedition.
The Athenians eventually defeat the invading Amazons and drive the survivors out of the region.
Antiope dies fighting in an important version of the story.
The Amazonomachy later became one of Athens' favourite mythological images. Scenes of Greeks and Amazons appeared on temples, monuments and public art.
The conflict could therefore function as more than an adventure of Theseus: it became part of the mythological identity Athens created for itself.
