Notes

Atreus is one of the defining figures of the dynasty that bears his name. A son of Pelops, he becomes king of Mycenae and enters into a destructive rivalry with his brother Thyestes.

The brothers' conflict combines political ambition, adultery, betrayal and competing claims to the throne. Aerope, the wife of Atreus, becomes involved with Thyestes, and traditions concerning the golden lamb or fleece form part of their struggle for kingship.

Atreus eventually takes revenge in one of the most infamous episodes in Greek mythology. He kills the sons of Thyestes, prepares their bodies as food and serves them to their father at a banquet. Only after Thyestes has eaten does Atreus reveal what has happened.

The Feast of Thyestes transforms a dynastic dispute into a generational blood feud. Thyestes then seeks revenge, and the birth of Aegisthus becomes part of the mechanism through which that revenge continues.

Atreus does not escape the consequences of his own violence. Aegisthus eventually turns against him and kills him, returning power to Thyestes in an important strand of the tradition.

Atreus is also the father of Agamemnon and Menelaus in the familiar genealogy. Through them, the feud of the earlier generation becomes connected directly with the Trojan War and its aftermath.

His importance therefore lies not only in the horror of the banquet but in the way his actions shape everything that follows. The murders of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra and the revenge of Orestes all belong to a family already trapped in a pattern of retaliation established during the conflict between Atreus and Thyestes.

Ancient sources differ over the details of the kingship dispute, the golden lamb, the role of Aerope and the precise sequence of revenge. The recurring theme is the same: the struggle between Atreus and Thyestes turns family betrayal into inherited violence.
