Nausicaa and Odysseus

Shipwrecked on the land of the Phaeacians, Odysseus meets Princess Nausicaa, who helps him reach her father's court.

The Story

After losing his ship and surviving a storm, Odysseus reached the land of the Phaeacians.

Exhausted and alone, he encountered Nausicaa, the daughter of King Alcinous and Queen Arete.

Nausicaa had gone to the river with her attendants to wash clothing.

Odysseus emerged from hiding and approached them.

His appearance frightened the attendants, but Nausicaa remained calm.

Odysseus spoke carefully and asked for help.

Nausicaa recognised that he was a stranger in need rather than an immediate threat.

She provided him with clothing and instructions for reaching the palace.

She also explained how he should approach Queen Arete, whose support would be important.

Odysseus followed her advice and eventually reached the Phaeacian court.

There he was received as a guest and finally revealed his identity and the story of his wanderings.

The Phaeacians would ultimately provide the final stage of his journey home.
