Ananke and the Primordial Order
Ananke is a primordial force of necessity and inevitability, representing the ordering power that even the gods cannot easily escape.
The Story
Ananke was the primordial personification of necessity, compulsion and inevitability.
She belongs to the earliest layers of Greek cosmological thought, although traditions about her vary considerably and she is not given a large narrative mythology like Zeus or Cronus.
Ananke represents the idea that some things must happen because they are necessary.
In later cosmological traditions she could be associated with the ordering of the cosmos and with forces operating beyond the ordinary will of the gods.
Her importance therefore lies less in individual adventures and more in the concept she embodies.
Greek mythology repeatedly returns to the idea that even powerful gods cannot always escape necessity, fate or the consequences of earlier actions.
Ananke provides a divine expression of that underlying principle.
